Charlotte Kaae is a good friend and also quite frankly an impressively inspirering and interesting person. Those who follow her blog know that she and her boyfriend bought a house last year, and they are in the process of renovating it. I thought to myself that I wanted to make her a handmade “new house” present, when I finally got to visit her. In my usual style, the present wasn’t finished for that visit, but at least I managed to finish it in time to give it to her at the trade show in Vejle this weekend.

Valget faldt på “Which Way North” fra “The Compass Collection”.

I asked her what her (and the boyfriend’s) favorite colours for textiles in the home were and weren’t much surprised by the answer (red, orange and yellow). A bit of grey had to be there as well, and thus I went to work on a pillow for their sofa. I had seen some beautiful examples of compass points and found one, which didn’t look too difficult for a beginner like myself. The block is called “Which Way North” and is from a free collection of beautiful compass point patterns. When I had finished the piercing, I wavered a bit about how to quilt it, but I chose to quilt lines following the outline of the point structure. The inner section is quilted in red thread. The yellow and orange with a golden thread, and the outline of the whole point with silver. That added the last luxury touch which I wanted to give.

The back is a piece of cotton I had lying around for a chair, but that was never going to happen, so I donated it to pillow backs instead. I’ve sewn in a zipper for closure (without a zipper foot for my sewing machine I might add) and was pretty happy with the result. The finished pilllow cover measures 35×35 cm, just the right size for an IKEA pillow. Luckily Charlotte was really happy when she got the pillow, so now I’m determined to also finish the second one of the pair (yup, there’s one more coming, Charlotte).
