My mother and I agreed on a plan this spring. We wanted to use some of the evenings of our summer holiday (which as mentioned were spent visiting her in Nuuk) to sew the top of a quilted bed spread for her bed. I suggested that we should make “Mountain Majesties” from Quiltville, which she happily agreed on. She chose the fabric at Speich Design during her last visit in the Spring, and when I was packing for our holiday, I remembered to include my cutting mat, rotary cutter and ruler in the bag. We had great fun with the project, and were really good at helping each other cut, pin and sew. It was a rather advanced pattern for me with all the cutting, sewing, pressing, trimming and cutting, but it was fun to be challenged. Both mum and I learned more about values in such a project, among other things, that you should put two medium values in different categories (“light” or “dark”), but at least we can view the top as a learning process.

At times a controlled form for chaos ruled, especially after we finished cutting the initial 120 squares, which then needed to be paired light and dark.

Afterwards the process was more controlled, and I got teased (albeit with love) about my tendency to stack things neatly. But the system is rather good, when you are chain piecing and don’t want to get the blocks mixed up.

Next part of the project will be to pick out fabric for two edges around the top. Then we’ll need to find a fabric for the back and some batting. I’m looking forward to helping mother quilt this beauty next time I’m vacationing in the far north.
