There is a good flow of finishing things at this time. Unfortunatel it seems only to concern knitting project… since LB still is stubbornly refusing to come out. But waiting time is good knitting time, and thus one project after another is finished.

Not all my projects are as old on the needles as the sweater for the Mate or the newly finished shawl. Once in a while the projects enjoy a much swifter progression to finishdom. This little, light and airy blouse is just such a “quick” thing. I started it on August 18th and finished it today, just two months later. It is just perfect and I really look forward to beginning to use it, for example over a little pretty dress.

It is a good and well written pattern from a very good book. The large part with lace knitting goes easily and without troubles, as long as you keep track of which round you are currently knitting. I handled this by taking a copy of my own book and crossing out the rounds as I knit them. After the lace, the knitting is purely on automatics, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I made a few changes, all of which are documented on my Ravelry project page, but the biggest one is that I knit a long piece in pure stockinette under the sleeves. This made the sweater longer and makes it reach the hips (or it would reach the hips if the belly wasn’t as big as it is), so it’s not so short as it would have been had I knitted purely from the pattern. There won’t be any pictures with “filling” this time, because even though I can actually wear it even with my very pregnant belly, it would be a shame, as it’s much prettier if it gets to fall as intended = not being stretched to fit over the belly. After having finished so many projects I’m in a bit of a doubt as to what to work on now… I need to empty my project basket and look through the current wips to see what fits the bill.

More than 2½ years after I started, the thin sweater for the Mate has finally reached the finish line. It is the third sweater I have knit for him. The two first (of which only the latter is documented here) are both knit in pure wool and on a 5mm needle, which makes them quite warm. They are used very, very rarely, as the Mate is pretty hot blooded and quickly develops signs of heat stroke if clad in wool. The lack of use has annoyed me, as I knit with the purpose of having the gifted items worn and used. Thus I decided to knit a thin sweater in cotton and linen, with the reasoning that he in that case at least wouldn’t be able to complain of “it being to warm”.

The actuall work of knitting the jumper has come in a series of stages. There was the sweet beginning, where I smiling and happily knit with the thought of presenting a “cold” sweater to the Mate. Quite soon I hit several problems, which sourered the progress. Linen and cotton aren’t the softest most yielding materials in the world, and certainly not in the Dunlin version. When you combine this with a rather hefty number of stitches (ca. 400) on a round and a 2½mm old plastic needle with unyielding cable, there isn’t much pointing to a happy relationship. Other projects tempted me and lured me away, but from time to time I has a bout of bad concience and knit a couple of rounds.

The turnabout came this summer, when I gave the jumper priority of summer knitting time. The years that had passed since the beginning has tought me quite a lot, among other things that the difficulties with a project may come from many different sources. After a couple of rounds to get reaquainted, I switched the needles to Addi Turbos. What a difference! Instead of fighting to force the stitches onto the needles, the knitting now slid perfectly easy along and the enjoyment was markedly increased.

After that point the progress was calm, but steady, and it was a good day, when I could pick up for the first sleeve. The second sleeve created a bit of a problem, but that was wholly my error. I should have known it would be impossible to count when trying to pick up stitches on an general election night… I ripped it out and redid it the day after.

There are several minor mistakes to be found in the sweater, but most can fit into the category “designer feature”. Among the worst is the fact that the light blue stripes aren’t the same size overall, but can be found in two widhts on the front and the sleeves. No worries, the Mate is happy and have worn his new sweater all day today. He has also told me that he’ll wear it for work on Monday, which is the highest praise to be found in this home. I’m happy that I finally have knit a sweater he can use more often, and also, I must admit, because I finally have finished this long-term project.

I have faithfully followed the pattern, and thus the sweater is knit in the round from the bottom up, with the fronts and back knit back and forth seperately and the sleeves picked up along the body and knit downwards. But another time I knit a sweater for the Mate, I’ll probably try to make it fit better around the shoulder area. However, “another time” may be quite some time off yet.

The yarn isn’t the softest you can find, but it actually gives a very beautiful finished cloth. The drape of the finished sweater is beautiful, and though it wasn’t a joy all the way through, I can actually recommend Dunlin for such sweaters.

Just as I imagined, the newest of the sweater projects is the one, which is finished first. The little Noro cardigan is finished and has been handed over to my good friend’s shop, where it’s to enter a career as a shop sample. Hopefully she’ll wash it first, as I didn’t manage to do that before delivery. It was an enjoyable knit and I might just make another one for myself.

It was the first time I knit with Silk Garden and it was actually a pleasure. There was a bit of vegetable matter in the yarn, but it was soon got rid of. I imagine that the yarn will be even softer after washing and then I think this cardigan would be lovely to wear.

And now the jumper for the Mate had better get priority again… a whole cheer leading squad turned up in the comments on the last post, and you are all perfectly right, he more than deserves a new sweater, so he’d better get it soon.
