My middle nephew turned 4 this Friday, and the family celebration was held this weekend. He is a sweet boy, who absolutely loves plush toys. A while ago I introduced him and his big brother to Miyazaki’s works, starting with “My Neighbour Totoro“, which was a great hit. Thus I thought it appropriate to make him a plush toy Totoro for a gift along with a couple more of the good, sweet, and rather whimpsical movies (I choose to increase their collection with Kiki and Ponyo).

I found a good and free pattern on the web (found here at Cheek and Stitch), but chose to change the fabric from felt to fleece to ensure the washability of the finished toy. Furthermore I enlarged the pattern (from A4 to A3) because Totoro isn’t a wee small thing in my oppinion. All the details except the mouth (which is embroidered on) was sewn on by machine. It took me 2 hours in a light influenza haze to make the toy, so it can’t be said to be difficult. It was really well received by the birthday boy, who hugged it several times, which I take as a hint of a great success.

Hello! Do you know where I can find my loch?

We have a monster in the house… a very, very cute monster, that is. I have finished the first knitted soft sculpture (or whatever you call such a creature) ever, and I’m head over heels crazy about it. Her name is Nessie and is a very sweet Loch Ness miss. She is inteded for MM, but at the moment I don’t know if I can make myself “part” with her.

It is a challenging, but also ver fun pattern to knit. The most time consuming/difficult part was to pick up the stitches for the flippers, but it is worth the fiddling as the finished result is really pretty.

I’ve knitted Nessie in Malabrigo Worsted, which is a single ply yarn, and that is obvious in the finished product as it has a clear bias. But for a toy it doesn’t matter that much, I think, it actually makes her seem more alive.

Ah'm a wild oneMønster/Pattern: Loch Ness Monster (Ravelry Link) af Hansi Singh. Changes: knitted the tip of the tail as an i-cord and omitted the horns.

Materialer/Materials: 36 gram Malabrigo Worsted (30 g Cabernet + 6 g Red Java), bamsefyld og noget strømpegarn til øjne / fiberfill as stuffing and a bit of sock yarn for the eyes.

Pinde/Needles: 3½mm

God eller grel?/Hot or not? I adore her. I’ll have to take a deep breath to pass her on, but I will, because I think MM will be very happy to play with her.
