Last week was spent on our first city vacation with the boys. We went to a smallish big city, Edinburgh, and it was fantastic. I have several time thought about, how amazingly a travelling experience changes, when you travel with kids. We have felt it on our summer vacations, though they often involve hiking and nature experiences. But it certainly is also the case, when you are in a city with the manifold attractions and experiences that are available in such a place.

We toured the city as well as we could, and saw castle and whisky, vulcanoes and museums. The old town is filled with beautiful, old houses, and narrow, steep closes (with and without steps). Strange and yet wonderful.

Another thing that fascinated me, was how close to the centre of the city the wilder landscape was. Holyrood Park with Salisbury Crags and Arthur’s Seat is almost in the centre of Edinburgh, and from the many heights you can easily see across the water (Firth of Forth) to the North, or to the south toward Pentland Hills. We were charmed and feel ready to go back armed with a car and some more weeks of vacation to explore the Scottish landscape. I think, we will be back before too long.
