Jeg har haft en ret vild uge. Vildt god, heldigvis!

I have had a pretty crazy week. Crazy good, luckily!

In the autumn, I was booked for two events this January (I said yes to both at a time, where I didn’t know I would be starting at a new job this month too), which I have been looking very much forward to.

Thuesday I held a little talk at Nordatlantens Brygge about my book, the inspiration behind the designs, and my design process. I had a great time, and had the very great pleasure to see one of the shawls in the wild, as one of the knitters had knit ‘Eiri’ and was wearing it. There is no greater compliment to a designer.

The second event was a workshop yesterday at the yarn shop Nynne & Co, where I taught a wonderful group of knitters about the logic behind the shaping of shawls. I love the mathematic inherrent in the shapes, and it was great to see, that the students caught the logic too.

In one single week, I have managed to tick off two items on my bucket list – one was to speak about my book and process, and the second was to teach a knitting workshop. Both will hopefully be something I will continue doing, but there is something special about the first times.

Last week was spent on our first city vacation with the boys. We went to a smallish big city, Edinburgh, and it was fantastic. I have several time thought about, how amazingly a travelling experience changes, when you travel with kids. We have felt it on our summer vacations, though they often involve hiking and nature experiences. But it certainly is also the case, when you are in a city with the manifold attractions and experiences that are available in such a place.

We toured the city as well as we could, and saw castle and whisky, vulcanoes and museums. The old town is filled with beautiful, old houses, and narrow, steep closes (with and without steps). Strange and yet wonderful.

Another thing that fascinated me, was how close to the centre of the city the wilder landscape was. Holyrood Park with Salisbury Crags and Arthur’s Seat is almost in the centre of Edinburgh, and from the many heights you can easily see across the water (Firth of Forth) to the North, or to the south toward Pentland Hills. We were charmed and feel ready to go back armed with a car and some more weeks of vacation to explore the Scottish landscape. I think, we will be back before too long.

At the beginning of June, I went on a trip to Madrid (actually my first time in Spain “proper” – somehow a jaunt on Lanzarote doesn’t really count). I participated in a conference on quality in official statistics (yup, I’m geeky in more ways than one).

The conference was very good and interesting, which was a good thing, because it’s some seriously long days (on the plus side that means quite a bit of knitting time as you keep you hands busy and your head clear to concentrate on the presentations). The long days unfortunately meant that there was little time to explore the city.

Somehow it’s not as exciting to be visiting a foreign capital, when you mostly get to look at it out the windows of a dark conference room.

I did manage to squeeze in some sightseeing – among other things because the city was alive until late in the evening. There was a good walk from my hotel to the conference, so by the simple tool of meandering a bit off the straight line I got to experience some of the mood and see some of the sights. To begin with, I must admit that the city wasn’t my favorite, but after a day or two I found that I had change my opinion – and now I’d quite like to get a chance to visit again soon.

Today is the last day of a wonderful vacation. I’m using it to look through some of all my pictures. We spent most of our vacation in Norway, which suited both the Mate and I – we like our summers a bit to the cold and clear side.

We hiked in the mountains, relaxed in the cabin, knitted both on the mountain tops and in the cabin (me), ate a lot of good food (all of us), ate a lot of chocolate (mostly the children), jumped around on the cliffs (only the children) and in the mud (all of us, though only by misstepping), and thus generally having a great vacation. The boys are good walkers and made us proud by enjoying the hikes.

I admit to carrying my knitting with me on the hikes to be able to practise what I call “knitting with a view”. Which is a rather glorious discipline. I also managed to finish several older projects, so I went home with a sense of fulfillment (and a tightly packed knitting bag).

Tomorrow the everyday humdrum awaits, but I am ready with fully recharged batteries. I hope the rest of you also have had a wonderful vacation.

The Mate, the kids, and I have spent our summer vacation driving about Germany and seeing some of all the things that you miss, if you just rush past on the autobahn on your way south. It was a good vacation. Germany is a beautiful and very diverse country. It is filled with beautiful scenery, beautiful little towns and strapping big cities, lots and lots of castles (some old, some not so old) and a plethora of opportunities for experiences. When we returned home, we had driven 3482 km, but none of them were wasted, because we had a blast all four of us.*

* I am utterly grateful that my children are so easy travellers on the long driving days that are a necessity on such a vacation. It makes travelling a whole lot easier and more fun.

I think I’ll always go back to Greenland. Again, and again, and again. The nature and the light fascinates me continually. During the two weeks of our absolutely wonderful Christmas and New Year vacation, I think I said “gosh, it’s so beautiful” every single day. And I meant it, every single day.

Now we’re back, back at home, back at work (both the real one and the knitting one). But I miss Greenland, the snow and being with all my family. The silver lining is the many happy memories and beautiful pictures, which the camera wielding members of the family kindly have given me a copy of. And that, my friends, is a rather good silver lining.
