I have been looking forward to this week with an excitement that is hard to convey. I have given myself a huge luxury, which is to take a weeks vacation from my fulltime job … to work for myself and my firm as a knitwear designer. For the longest time, I have wanted to give myself some more time to focus on designing, and all the other things that follow, but it is a hard task balancing that wish with the rest of my commitments in the measly 24 hours someone has decided is a day.

I didn’t get the perfect start on the week, as my computer chose to rebel and deny all access to any and all files gave me hell on earth a couple of problems. Fixing this took a couple of hours and a rather long call to a support person (who is now my favorite person on this planet, as I now have glorious access to all files again). Problem solved, so now the only question is whether I can keep myself busy all week long. But I rather suspect the answer is yes, as there is a lot of knitting that needs doing, and a lot of yarn that’s tempting me – for example a rather glorious pile of Pernilla from Filcolana. I am looking forward to seeing, what I can get done this week (and that hopefully includes a couple of blog posts).

Every year my mother and I go on an extended weekend trip. Our mission is always the same – enjoy each other’s company and listen to some good classic music live. This year we went to Stockholm. I have been there a couple of times recently, but always for work, so I haven’t actually seen the city properly since I was 10. Thus it was a great pleasure wandering around in the snow and experience it once more, talking and laughing and meandering as you do, when you don’t have many plans and all the time in the world.

We heard the Swedish Radio Symphonic (and choir) play the Epiphany galla concert, and we had a fun extra experience, as we the next day caught the last bit of the concert on television – it wasn’t even close to how fantastic it had sounded and felt in real life. I immediately thought of how utterly amazing some of the great concerts – which I have actually enjoyed on tv – would sound if I was there. That is, if I can apply the same factor to multiply the experience with. In other words, the live experience of that galla concert was breathtaking and mind blowing fantastic.

No travels without a visit to a local yarn store. My mother let herself be dragged to “Litet Nystan“, which was a really cool and pretty shop in a lovely neighbourhood. There were pretty yarns from all over the world, but also a great selection of Swedish yarns. I have a kind of principle (not that I always keep it, mind) to buy “local” yarns when travelling. My yarn purchases is mostly souvenirs, more than project related. And with souvenirs it’s a lot more fun, if it’s yarn you can’t just get everywhere. I also bought the quirky and pretty sock book #tantulltusssockor by Anna Bergman, which I have seen doing the rounds on social media – and it’s just as good, as I had hoped.

All in all it was a wonderful trip (as per usual). I feel incredibly lucky that I have a mother, who likes travelling with me like this (and that I have a husband, who supports this). We could have a blast anywhere, but Stockholm was actually a little bit magical. I wouldn’t mind a revisit some time in the future.

I always feel positive at the beginning of a year – which actually is a bit funny, as nothing has changed besides an arbitrary number on a calendar. But I usually think about the things that happened during the last year – and about all the things, that will happen (at least those that are planned to happen) in the new. I might be a hopeless optimist, but at least it’s quite nice wearing rose tinted glasses once every year.

I am pretty sure that 2017 will be an exciting year – at least for me, if all my plans hold true. For the first time, since I started being a knit designer, I have given myself actual time in my calendar for working with this – with my designs and all my knit related plans. I am honestly excited about this.

I also hope that it will be a year, where I continue to post in here. I really like my blog and the world that it opens for me. Happy New Year to all of you on the other side (even if the greeting is a bit late) – I hope you have a wonderful and giving year.

Merry Christmas to you all. I hope that you all have a wonderful Holiday time, whether it is concentrated around Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or any other (or all) days.

Our Christmas Eve was wonderful! Beautiful and peaceful, filled with joy and energy (it’s difficult not to be, when we’ve got two happy and energy filled boys), filled with song and food and family. This morning we have all the time in the world to play – with yarn (that would be me), with books (the Mate’s great joy) and with Lego (both boys are happily building their gifts) – an absolutely perfect way to enjoy the peace of the season.

I hope that you enjoy your days out there.

It is December (I don’t think, I’m alone in this realisation, but perhaps alone in being surprised?). There is full swing in the social calendar, the secret and not so secret stuff, Christmas build up (and high expectations from the kids), good food, and normal everyday being busy. In this house, we really love December, but it’s also always a challenge.

One way to cope with all this is to dive into some (new) knitting. Back in November, I managed to swing by [g]uld’s pop-up store in Copenhagen – pure luxury in every corner of the room. I got the well known designer’s itch, and it resulted in me coming home with a little pile of treasures, which I’m now turning into a Christmas elf hat of the more subtle kind. I’m really looking forward to whether the knitted reality will look anything like the idea, I have in my head. But that’s normal with knitting and new designs. Besides, it’s great fun to knit and quite soothing in this whirlwind of a month.

What a way to spend a weekend. This last weekend, I went to Oslo with Signe to join the multitude of knitters gathering for Oslo Knitting Festival.

We arrived just as the first snow of the season had begun to fall, which didn’t dampen my enthusiasm one bit (I love, love snow!) and had plenty of time to walk a bit about before the festival opened the doors at Oslo main library – Deichmanske. So we enjoyed a wee visit to Pickles Oslo and a walk through the snow in the streets.

img_2569

img_2555

Deichmanske is a pretty incredible place to hold a knitting festival. Great big rooms filled with knitters (and their incredible sweaters) and books. The market place was also quite an experience – though I thought that maybe the vendors had their challenges fitting in the room. You didn’t notice that much as a browsing knitter, as there was plenty of good stuff to look at (i.e. be distracted by). I didn’t buy much, just “Sticka Svenska Mönster” by Maja Karlsson (of Majas Manufaktur), who also did a great talk about the journey of the book. I also fell hard for the kit for the Gokstad Shawl by Julie Dubreux with yarn from Norne (I just couldn’t resist the combined lure of a viking ship inspiration, cables, and yarn dyed to match the Norwegian seas).

But the very best about the festival was meeting all the great people, and getting to chat with them – Merete Monstermønster and her gorgeous wasp cardigan, Marion, Ann, and many, many more. It was so incredibly nice meeting them all.

I really hope the festival will be back next year (this was only the second year) – I for one am ready to head north again.

Today, the 1st of November 2016, it is ten years since I put the first post up on my newly started blog. Ten years! I sat on the other side of the planet, in New Zealand, and had in the past months found and enjoyed several blogs. I was inspired, and thus I jumped into blogland, and have never regretted it.

I must admit to loving to give presents away, which is why I have been looking forward to celebrate this big blogiversary with a giveaway.

img_2457

I have collected a little pile of gifts, which I will split between 3 lucky readers. To enter the giveaway, just write a comment here on this blog post, and if you want, you can tell me how long you have been reading, how you started, or something other (or just that you can’t resist the lure of the gifts and have your fingers crossed for winning). Internationals are welcome to join.

Last chance to leave a comment is on Monday the 7th of November at 7 pm (Danish time).

I hope you will join me in celebrating my many years of blogging 🙂 And now, I’d better get to presenting the gifts.

img_2473

The first little pile consists of 4 skeins lovely New Zealand merino yarn (which is appropriate, as the blog is born in NZ), 2 skeins of hand dyed sock yarn (1 skein of Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock in the colour “Irving Park” and 1 skein from Knitted Wit in the colour “Twister”), 4 stitch markers (produced by Lykkefanten herself) with fresh water pearls, and finally “Sand”, which is Katrine Wohllebe’s new booklet. Katrine has been wonderful and have sponsored on booklet for the blogiversary. In addition (but not pictured) the winner will get to choose 3 patterns from among my designs.

img_2486

The second gift consists of 6 skeins of Anina from Filcolana (enough for knitting a big shawl), 3 skeins of another of my all time favorite lace knitting yarns, Malabrigo Lace (in the colour “Marine”), a set of 4 stitch markers (once again made by me), and the booklet “Strik og Mal – Grafisk Gobelinstrik” by Charlotte Kaae, who has been a darling and have sponsored one for the giveaway. For internationals, she’ll provide a code for an e-book in English (though this will require a bit of patience as she’s still working on the tech). Once again, the winner will get a free choice of 3 patterns from my collection of designs.

img_2484

The last gift pile consists of two gorgeous project bags, which Signe Strømgaard has sponsored for the blogiversary (it is the big and the small size), 8 skeins of Cascade 220, 1 skein of hand spun Rabouillet 2-ply (spun by myself – I really wanted there to be one gift, which was made by me in all the prizes), and finally a pink and glittery yarn monster. Of course this pile also comes with a choice of 3 patterns from among my designs.

I wasn’t only interested in the interesting museums and the beautiful landscapes on our recent visit to Edinburgh. I had a mission, and succeeded, in finding and enjoying one of the city’s yarn shops. I had read about some of them on Karie’s blog, and was determined to find at least one and get a chance to look at (i.e. pet) some Scottish yarn.

dsc06541

I chose to aim for Kathy’s Knits, which was situated reasonably close to where we were staying, and I didn’t regret my choice. The shop has a fantastic selection of British yarns, and a multitude of interesting books. I chatted quite a bit with the lovely lady, who took care of the shop on that day, and it turned out that she was no other than Lucy Hague, who has written and absolutely wonderful book with the most amazing shawls with cables inspired by traditional celtic patterns. I absolutely had to buy the book, and Lucy was kind enough to not only sign it for me, but to pose for a photo for the blog as well. Thank you, Lucy, it was a pleasure speaking with you.

dsc06544

I ended up spending a rather long time in the shop dithering between this yarn and that and trying to decide what to buy (the solution of picking “one of each” was tempting, but unfortunately not an option). The choice ended up being 6 hanks of Dovestone from baa ram ewe, hopefully they will be enough for a cardigan for myself. I also had to have another book, the “Stranded Colourwork Sourcebook” by Felicity Ford. I am quite inspired by Felicity’s work, so a sourcebook on picking colours for stranded knitting was just perfect.

img_2428

It was a huge pleasure to visit Kathy’s Knits, and the experience is highly recommendable.

Last week was spent on our first city vacation with the boys. We went to a smallish big city, Edinburgh, and it was fantastic. I have several time thought about, how amazingly a travelling experience changes, when you travel with kids. We have felt it on our summer vacations, though they often involve hiking and nature experiences. But it certainly is also the case, when you are in a city with the manifold attractions and experiences that are available in such a place.

dsc06484

We toured the city as well as we could, and saw castle and whisky, vulcanoes and museums. The old town is filled with beautiful, old houses, and narrow, steep closes (with and without steps). Strange and yet wonderful.

img_2398

Another thing that fascinated me, was how close to the centre of the city the wilder landscape was. Holyrood Park with Salisbury Crags and Arthur’s Seat is almost in the centre of Edinburgh, and from the many heights you can easily see across the water (Firth of Forth) to the North, or to the south toward Pentland Hills. We were charmed and feel ready to go back armed with a car and some more weeks of vacation to explore the Scottish landscape. I think, we will be back before too long.

It has been a wonderful day today – especially since it’s my birthday. I have enjoyed my beautiful presents (the knitting bag with the shiny Lykkefant is a present from wonderful Signe) and the joy of casting on a new project. I am now the grand total of 33 years old (I’ve always had a fondness for palindrome numbers) and my family and workplace have been wonderful and celebrated me during the day. But I actually cheated a bit, and started the celebration last weekend, where I had asked my friends to come celebrate with me.

I had decided that I wanted to celebrate my birthday with a mini-workshop on natural dyeing with indigo. So I hired Anne from [g]uld to come and teach us a bit about natural dyeing and let us play a lot with the indigo vat and yarn. We had a blast and the hours flew by with laughter, amazingly high yarn-nerd-factor, a lot of yarn in the vat, beautiful blue nuances drying in the wind, and several discussions about whether to let the yarn remain in the vat a couple of minutes more.

Most of my guests went home with a skein of yarn, or two (or possibly more) in beautiful blue shades. We were told to rinse the yarn the next day, after the colour had had a chance to set. So I spent some time Sunday outside with a couple of buckets and a lot of water (some of it from above, but a little rain probably didn’t hurt the rinsing), and once again was amazed at how pretty the yarn had become. Today the yarn was finally dry (perfect timing), so I wound a little ball and enjoyed a birthday cast on for a Muscardinus for a friends little daughter.

img_2202

It has been the best birthday celebration in a long time, and I can only recommend to hold a party which includes yarn, dye and nerds (and I can also fully recommend the ladies from [g]uld, they are wonderful people and good at what they do). Now I only have one more question… when can I find another opportunity (excuse?) to play with some of the other wonderful shades of natural dyeing?

Feels very appropriate to watch this at the #strikkebio the day after the mishap at the Oscars 😉
