I have forgotten to show that I actually did manage to finish the second train sweater, so Filcolana also has one for the fall collection. I’ll admit that I had a hard time finishing within my own deadline.

Now everything is coming together. The pattern has been written (and proofed), and translated to English. So I’m guessing it might not be too long before “Futfut” will be up on Filcolana’s webpage. I’m really hoping to see a lot of happy kids with train sweaters this fall.

In the meantime, I can announce that LB has ordered his next sweater – a whale sweater – and that it must be finished for Christmas (“so I can wear it for Christmas Eve, mommy”).

Thank you for your comments about deadline knitting (and good guesses as to when I’m finished). I’ve almost finished knitting the first sleeve even though I’m far from finished with the body. I’ve just found that the big charts for the train on the body are a bit complicated for commute knitting (at least for me), so the sleeves are my go-to on-the-go project. I’ve made a (little) bit of progress on the body as well, so I’m feeling confident that I’m going finish before the deadline. I think that I’ll dedicate tonight to making the train appear on the tracks…

I am deadline knitting at the moment. I need to knit another train jumper – or Futfut, as it will be named, so Filcolana can get a sample for their collection (LB certainly won’t be giving up his jumper). It needs to be finished (including weaving in ends and washing) next Friday afternoon, which in a world where I’m trying to be a serious economist during work hours means I need to finish it Thursday evening. The picture below is from the commute home from work today (it feels so utterly appropriate knitting a train jumper in a train), so there is a good deal left to knit (no, I haven’t made progress since then).

I have wondered how to make this a bit more interesting, both for you and for myself. So I’ve decided to make a little contest, where one of you can win the yarn for a train jumper, so it can be ready for knitting when the pattern is published by Filcolana (it will be a free pattern).

The rules? Write a comment to this post, and tell me how you feel about deadline knitting, and when you think I’ll be finished with the knitting on this little train jumper – date and time (CET). I’d better upfront define “finished” – it is the moment I put it in the water for washing. The person with the closest guess wins New Zealand lammeuld in the 5 colours, he or she decides for a train jumper, and enough of it to knit the wished for size. I’m more than happy to post internationally, so comments from abroad are more than welcome.

The comment must be placed before Sunday 10th of April at noon Danish time  update: Betting is closed 🙂  I’ll keep you posted on the progress after guessing has been closed.

There is an utterly satisfied 4-year old in my family at the moment. LB has (finally) received his train sweater, and he is happy. Very happy. So happy in fact that he has asked to wear it every day since it was ready for use.

He has followed the process very closely. In the beginning he asked if it was finished at least a couple of times every day, but as the sweater didn’t seem to progress nearly as fast as he wished the frequency of the questions fell. Even so, he often brought me the project bag containing the sweater and told me to knit it (instead of whatever other project I was working on). During the last month or so, he has only asked once or twice a week – perhaps he was beginning to loose hope?

togtrøje3

The sweater is a test of a design, which will be part of a coming Filcolana collection, and therefore it is made from the wonderful New Zealand lammeuld. It is a lovely yarn, and soft and springy after washing. It also has a rather decent yardage, as I only needed 120 g for a size LB. Now I only need to work up another sample for Filcolana, as I happen to believe that the young gentleman will protest quite loudly if I suggest to appropriate his sweater for use as a collection sample.

It was a fun knit, and also rather quick if you discount my slight sleeve problems. I’ve found myself thinking about making more stranded sweaters for LB, but at the moment my time budget for knitting is pretty full, so it will probably have to wait a while.

The picture above seems to show that all is well with LB’s train sweater (apart from the wee little fact that it’s not nearly as far along as he or I want it to be)… but the picture is a big fat lie! For the past week I have lived with the worst knitting curse I have yet had the misfortune to encounter.

This picture is from Saturday, where I was enjoying myself in Hamburg with my mother, and the keen reader will spot that the sleeve seemed to be further along at that point. Perfectly right – this was the second (!) incarnation, which at that point was nearing the place where I once again realized that I had knit it too narrow. I had quite a selection of inventive words, when that realization settled in.

DSC04540

The only reason for not having a major fit and throwing the whole project into a dark corner is that LB really, really look forward to this sweater. Especially after the train has been knit on the body. Sometimes he brings me the body when I am knitting on (one of the incarnations of) the sleeve and says that I’ll need the body as well. So I’ll suck up my bad knitting karma and knit this third version as well – this time it looks right. As a side note I can state that New Zealand lammeuld holds up really well to this sort of abuse – it’s perfectly fine to knit and look at with even after being ripped back twice.
