Som tidligere nævnt, besøgte jeg i sidste weekend bl.a. Hjelholts Uldspinderi, hvor vi fik en fin og grundig fremvisning. Jeg fik lov at tage en lille serie videoer af produktionen, og selvom de på ingen måde yder stedet retfærdighed, så giver de et lille indblik i, hvordan uldens vej er gennem produktionsmaskineriet fra fibre til færdigt garn. Hjelholts hjemmeside har selv nogle fine videoer, der viser produktionen, men jeg kunne alligevel ikke lade være med at tage mine egne minder på video.
As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, I visited Hjelholts Uldspinderi (Spinning Mill) last weekend, where we were treated to a very comprehensive and good tour of the spinning mill. I was allowed to take some videos of the production, and though they in no way can convey the feeling of being there (I can only recommend a visit), they do give some sense of how the wool travels through the production line from fibre to finished yarn. Though Hjelholts homepage has some pretty beautiful videos of the production process, I couldn’t help making my own as a sort of souvenir.
Første skridt, efter at ulden er blevet vasket og tørret (Signe har nogle smukke billeder af uld i alle afskygninger på deres lager), er at køre den gennem en Wulfe. Wulfen findeler ulden, så den bliver løsere og luftigere og nemmere at køre gennem kartemaskinen. Min video af maskinen blev desværre ikke så god, da jeg var for travlt optaget af at beundre den flyvende sky af fibre.
The first step after the wool has been washed and dried (Signe has some beautiful pictures of the wool lying around there in every nook and corner of their ware house) is to run it through the wulfe. This machine seperates the fibre into fine locks, so it will run more smoothly through the carding process. my video of this machine unfortunately isn’t that good, as I was too busy admirering the flying cloud of fibre.
Andet skridt er karteprocessen, der foregår en en lang maskine, der er et tosæts karteværk. Først bliver ulden læsset i maskinen, der derefter fodrer selve karteværket jævnt med ulden (0:17). Ulden går gennem første sæt af kartevalser og bliver til et bredt stykke karteflor (0:45). Derefter bliver kartefloret ført op over nogle transportbånd (0:50), der vender kartefloret en kvart omgang, sådan at det går igennem det andet hold kartevalser “på tværs” af den originale retning (1:27). På denne måde bliver de sidste ujævnheder fjernet fra ulden. Endelig skæres kartefloret i tynde baner båndgarn (2:01), der rulles op i enden af maskinen (2:15). Næste skridt er så den faktiske spinden af garnet…
The second step in the production line happens in a long machine, a two set carding machine. First the wool is loaded into the machine, which then feeds the actual machine with a steady stream of fibres (0:17). The wool then is run through the first set of carding drums and ends up as a wide piece of unbroken carded wool (0:45), this carded strip then goes up and over on a couple of transport bands (0:50), which turns the strip a quarter turn, so that it goes into the next set of cards on a cross to the direction of the first (1:27). This ensures that the last irregularities in the fibre are removed. Finally the strip is cut into pencil roving, or unspun yarn (2:01), which is rolled up in big rolls at the end of the machine (2:15). Next step is the actual spinning of the yarn…
Nanna fra Filcolana har bestilt et par smådesign i hendes dejlige garn. Jeg skal lave et sæt med luffer og hue i flerfarvestrik i Peruvian Highland Wool. Jeg har valgt tre farver at lege med, en petroleumsblå og to neutrale, nemlig lysegrå og hvid. Jeg tror, de vil kunne spille rigtig godt sammen. Lige nu går ideen ud på et relativt simpelt, strukturelt mønster med den grå som bundfarve. Pindene er spidset, og jeg starter strikkeprøven senere i dag.
Nanna from Filcolana has comissioned me to make a couple of small designs in her lovely yarn. I am to make a set of mittens and a hat in colourwork in Peruvian Highland Wool. I’ve chosen three colours to play with, a petrol blue and two neutrals, light grey and white. I think they will work very, very well together. At the moment the idea goes in the direction of a relatively simple, structural pattern with the grey as a main colour. The needles have been sharpened and swatching will commence very soon.
Den anden del af opgaven er et par håndledsvarmere/fingerløse vanter i Arwetta Classic. Jeg har tænkt at udnytte de smukke farver i et løs-af mønster, sådan at der kommer striber både den ene og den anden vej, men uden at man skal sidde med mere end en farve af gangen. Begge designs skal være færdige, så de kan komme med på messe i januar, men det tror jeg nu nok skal gå. Større opgaver er det jo heldigvis ikke.
The second part of the design task is a couple of fingerless mitts/gloves in Arwetta Classic. I am planning to use the beautiful colours in a slip stitch pattern, which will make stripes appear in both directions (at least I hope it will) without the knitter having to use more than one colour at a time. Both designs need to be finished, so they can go with Nanna to a trade show in January, but I think they will be finished some time before (or at least I hope so). Luckily both are quite small to work.
Drømmen om snoningsstrikkekursus lever videre. Jeg har fået en dejlig garnsponsor, nemlig Nanna fra Filcolana, som har sendt mig denne herlige bunke garn (det er Peruvian Highland Wool), der blandt andet skal blive til en hel masse strikkeprøver til kompendiet. Det er det, som det gråbrune garn er tænkt til. Det herlige blågrønne bliver så til en poncho med en masse snoninger, som det er tanken skal inkluderes som opskrift i kompendiet. Jeg har allerede hvæsset strikkepindene og glæder mig til at gå i gang for alvor.
The dream of teaching a cable-knitting-workshop still lives. I have found a wonderful yarn sponsor, Nanna from Filcolana, who has sent me this gorgeous pile of yarn (it’s Peruvian Highland Wool), which will first become a bunch of swatches for the teaching material. That’s what the grey-brown yarn is for. The blue-greenish is destined to become a big poncho with a whole lot of cables, and then I’ll include the pattern as a part of the material for the workshop. I’ve already sharpened my knitting needles and am looking very much forward to starting this project.
Bare fordi fortøjringsringene så så forfrosne ud på havnen med det isfyldte vand. Bare fordi jeg havde smukke rester liggende, der kunne pynte (og varme?). Bare fordi jeg havde lyst. Bare fordi jeg kunne.
Just because the mooring rings looked utterly cold and lonely at the waterfront overlooking the ice filled water. Just because I had beautiful bits of yarn lying in my stash, which could jazz (and warm?) them up. Just because I felt like it. Just because I could.

Årets allerførste garnkøb (kan I høre mig pudse glorien) skete i søndags, hvor jeg og en god ven var til “homeparty” med Sanne B. aka. Rasmilla i Dorthes kælder. Skønt arrangement med masser af søde og snakkende kvinder.
The very first yarn purchase of 2011 (yes, I am indeed almost glowing with pride) happened last Sunday. A good friend and I went to a “homeparty” with Sanne B. aka. Rasmilla in Dorthe’s basement. A really good event with plenty of sweet and talkative women.
Der var rigtig meget garn at kigge på og lade sig friste af, men jeg holdt mig nogenlunde på måtten og købte begrænset ind. Dels blev det til opskrift og garn til en Viggo (Ravelry link) – det er det blå garn til venstre og den sennepsgule som kontrastfarve, og dels lidt ekstra luksusgarn sådan bare fordi. Jeg har gået og beundret mit indkøb siden jeg kom hjem med det, men jeg må ikke slå op endnu. Der er lige et par andre ting, der skal ryddes af “igangværende” listen først.
There were a lot of yarn to look at and be tempted by, but I kept within a reasonable limit and only bought a select sample. I bought the pattern and yarn for a Viggo (Ravelry link) – they yarn is the two blue tones on the left and the bright yellow for contrast. I also happened to be unable to resist a two small skeins of luxury yarn – a true “just because” purchase. I’ve been admirering the yarn every day since I bought it, but I’m not allowed a cast on just yet. I need to clear a couple of other things off the wip list first.
Det er altså ikke min skyld, at tælleren for lageropbygning stiger. Jeg har faktisk ikke købt garn i år (endnu), men til gengæld har jeg allerede fået en hel del (nåååhhhh, hvor eeeer det synd… ikke?). Sidste fantastiske forøgelse skete i dag, da jeg hentede en længe ventet pakke fra Liz, med bl.a. hemmeligt garn til den næste sokkeklub, som jeg designer for hende. Men selv når det hemmelige er pillet ud af bunken, er der rimelig meget tilbage. Nyt garn giver ny inspiration, og jeg er allerede kommet til at gå i gang med (endnu) en vest til mig selv i noget af garnet.
It’s not my fault that the counter for in-flow to the stash has been rising. I actually haven’t bought any yarn at all this year (yet), but others have already given me quite a lot of yarn (yes, I know, it’s soooooo sad … or not). Last stash enhancement happened today, as I picked up a long awaited package from Liz, containing among other things the super secret yarn for the next sock club, which I’m designing for her. But even with those skeins set aside, the pile remained pretty impressive. New yarn equals new inspiration for me, and I’ve already started (another) vest for myself in some of the yarn.
Mine tiltag synes at virke. Jeg kan se fremskridt i det projekt, jeg fokuserer på, og henover weekenden har jeg reduceret listen af igangværende projekter med 3. Det synes jeg egentlig er helt godt.
Men egentlig er der ikke nogen grund til at belønne det, for det bærer lønnen i sig selv. Jeg kan mærke, at det får mig til at slappe lidt mere af. Tværtimod handler belønningen om, at jeg for noget tid siden ramte 100 % på mit Sock-Yarn-O-Meter. Det tog mig ikke voldsom lang tid at finde ud af hvad det skulle være, for en gang i sommers havde jeg den store fornøjelse at få lov til at gramse på et ganske stort udvalg af Slavi’s Cascade 220. Det blev til 8 nøgler i farven Provence – den smukkeste rustrøde med lige det hint af orange, som gør mig helt salig. Det bliver til en Vivian (uden hætte), når jeg engang “får lov” til at begynde nye projekter. Indtil videre går jeg bare og aer garnet og glæder mig over, at muligheden er derude i fremtiden.
My self-limiting rules seem to be working. I am enjoying seeing actual progress in the project, which has focus, and during the weekend I have reduced the list of wips by 3. That’s pretty good in my book.
But this post isn’t about rewarding myself for following that. Those measures carry their own reward. I can feel that I am more calm and able to relax with my knitting. The reward in the post title refers to the fact that I hit the 100 % on my Sock-Yarn-O-Meter a couple of weeks ago. It didn’t take me long to decide what to give myself, as I had been in company with a rather ample selection of Slavi’s Cascade 220 on one fine afternoon in the summer. I picked 8 skeins in the colour Provence – it is a most beautiful rusty red with just a hint of orange which makes it glow from within. It will become a Vivian (without the hood), once I again am “allowed” casting on. So far, I am just admirering and petting the yarn and enjoying thinking about the future, which holds such promises.
Min Tour går rigtig godt i år. Af en eller anden grund er jeg produktiv, men jeg klager ikke, for når fibrene bliver til garn, så bliver der jo plads til flere fibre, ikke? Det er i de sidste par dage blevet til hele to færdige garner.
My Tour is going really well this year. For some unexplicable reason I seem to have become productive. It’s no reason for complaint, since I figure that when the fibres become yarn, I have room for more fibres, right? In the last couple of days, I’ve finished two new yarns.

Mit næste projekt er at spinde noget rimelig brugbart sokkegarn. Jeg er gået i gang, men det tager godt nok lang tid at spinde de tynde, tynde tråde, der skal tvindes til et 4-trådet garn. Selvom jeg ikke når i mål med det sidste projekt, vil jeg sige, at Touren har været en success for mig. Jeg har genopdaget glæden ved at sidde ved rokken, og så har jeg fået noget virkelig skønt garn ud af det, som jeg glæder mig rigtig meget til at strikke med.
My next project is to spin some useable sock yarn. I have started, but oh my, it does take long to spin the fine, fine singles that are destined to be plied into a 4ply yarn. Even though I may not finish this latest project, I’d say that the Tour has been a roaring success for me. I have rediscovered the joy of sitting by my wheel, and furthermore, I’ve managed to spin some really lovelly yarn, which I look forward to knitting with.
Tour de Fleece er en god motivationsfaktor. Efter næsten ikke at have rørt min spinderok siden sidste års Tour, har jeg nu færdiggjort et rimelig stort spindeprojekt på under to uger.
Tilbage i august sidste år gik jeg i gang med at spinde den store portion Blue Faced Leicester uld, som jeg havde købt på Fåreavlernes Julemarked i 2007. Jeg var nået knap en spole ind i den før jeg gik i stå, og der blev ikke spundet mere før jeg, motiveret af de herrers cykelløb og gruppen på Ravelry, fik sat mig tilbage ved rokken i begyndelsen af juli. Nu er jeg så færdig og har hjemmespundet garn nok til en sweater (det håber jeg i hvert fald)… det føles lidt som en drøm.
Tour de Fleece is good for motivation. I had hardly touched my spinning wheel since the Tour of last year, and now I have just finished a rather large spinning project in under two weeks.
Back in August last year, I started spinning the large portion Blue Faced Leicester wool that I bought at the “Sheep breeder’s Christmas Fair” in 2007. I had managed to fill a bobbin before the progress halted, and nothing more was spun until I, moved by the sweating men on bikes and the group on Ravelry, again sat down by the wheel at the beginning of July. Now I am finished and have enough home spun yarn for a sweater (at least I hope so)… it feels rather like a dream.

Jeg har tvundet garnet med 3 tråde for at få et lidt tykkere garn, end jeg normalt spinder. Jeg blandede spolerne med entrådet garn, mens jeg tvandt (hedder det det?) for at blande eventuelle forskelle mest muligt. Efter vask slappede garnet meget af og er blevet blødt og elastisk og meget lækkert. Jeg glæder mig til at strikke med det, men jeg har bestemt mig for at tage lidt til og prøve at finde den helt rigtige opskrift.
Det næste spindeprojekt er allerede godt i gang. Jeg spinder nogle af de fibre, jeg købte på sidste års julemarked, til et rigtigt luksusgarn … en blanding af merino og cashmere, der bliver tvundet sammen med en tyndere tråd ren silke!
I plied a 3 ply yarn to get a slightly thicker yarn than I normally spin. I mixed the bobbins with singles as much as I could while I plied to try to even out eventual differences in the singels. After a washing the yarn relaxed beautifully and has become very soft and elastic and very very yummy. I look forward to knitting with it, but I have decided that I will take some time and carefully search for the “perfect” pattern.
The next spinning project is already going well. I am spinning some of the fibres I bougth on the most recent Christmas fair. They are destined for a pure luxury yarn… a mix of merino and cashmere that is to be plied with a thinner single of pure silk!
Sådan nogle tvungne hjemmedage, hvor computerarbejde er mere eller mindre forbudt kan give anledning til lidt af hvert. Jeg benyttede lejligheden til at lave en hovedgennemgang af mit lager. Sådan en, hvor alle kasser og kurve var ude og blev tømt, og alle nøgler blev vendt og drejet og vurderet. Var det noget jeg ikke kunne se mig selv strikke med inden for de næste par år røg det i en pose, der vil blive doneret til den lokale børnehave.
Der er nu stadig meget tilbage, selv efter gennemgangen. Lageret måler lige omkring de 24 kg, og det er vel egentlig ikke småting. Risikoen ved sådan en lagergennemgang er høj! Man bliver nemt ramt af en ubændig lyst til at starte på det og det og det og det… men det er også en god øvelse, for jeg føler ro ved at have overblik. Og inspirationen (som start-lysten vel også kan kaldes) er god og kan minde mig om, hvor meget utrolig lækkert garn, jeg ejer. Nu ved jeg også præcis, hvor (i hvilken kasse) jeg skal søge, hvis jeg skal bruge et bestemt nøgle strømpegarn, eller det tykke uldgarn fra New Zealand, eller de fine Habu lace garn, jeg købte i New York.
Og nu et emneskift: Jeg vil gerne sige mange tak for de “god bedring” kommentarer I lagde på sidste blogpost. Det gjorde godt! Jeg har det meget bedre og skal starte på nedsat tid på mandag. Jeg glæder mig utrolig meget til at komme i gang med arbejdet igen.
Such a stream of forced stay-at-home-days, where work/play at the computer is more or less forbidden, can be the cause of many different things. I used the opportunity of an uninterupted morning to take a thorough stock of my stash. You know the kind where all boxes and baskets and bags where emptied, and all skeins and balls where turned and examined. If I met something I couldn’t see myself knitting with in the cause of the next few years, I put it in a bag to be donated to the local kindergarten.
There is still rather a lot of yarn left, even after the stock taking. The stash is fully grown, measuring about 24 kg, which isn’t small, however much I attempt to say so. Such a survey of the stash has its risks! It is very easy to get caught in the feeling that you really should start this and this and this… but it is a good excersize, because now I feel a kind of ease and calmness coming to me due to a now good overview. And the inspiration – another word for the lust-of-new-cast-ons – is good and reminds me of how much wonderful yarn I actually own. I now also know exactly where (in which box) I should search for any specific skein of sock yarn, or the gorgeous woollen worsted yarn from New Zealand, or the fine lace from Harbu that I brought home with me from New York.
And now for something completely different: I’d like to say thank you for the “get well” wishes in the comments on the last post. I’m much improved and can look forward to starting work, albeit at a reduced number of hours, this coming Monday.
